Cocoa powder reduces obesity in mice

Studies on mice have demonstrated the ability of cocoa powder to reduce obesity.

The amount of cocoa fed to the mice was equivalent to about 5 cups of hot cocoa daily for humans.

Cocoa powder is rich in fibre, magnesium, potassium, iron and phytochemicals such as antioxidant polyphenols.

The researchers found that the cocoa-treated mice gained weight at 22% lower rate compared to high-fat-fed mice.  At the end of the study the cocoa-fed mice had 28% less fat in their livers, 57% lower levels of oxidative stress and 75% lower levels of DNA damage in the liver.
